Abstract

1,136,685. Edge connectors for printed circuit boards. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 8 March, 1967 [15 April, 1966], No. 10807/67. Heading H2E. An edge connector comprises opposed pairs of signal contacts 25-26 and earth contacts 27 mounted alternately in an insulating housing 23. Each earth contact 27 is a U-shaped phosphor-bronze plate coated with plastics material except at end portions 71, 73 which are gold-plated and engage printed earth contacts 18 on a panel 11, slots (75, Fig. 3, not shown), in the limbs of the contacts 27 biasing the portions 71, 73 against the panel. Parts 77 of the earth contacts 27 engage notches in the housing 23 and an earthed bar 43, which lies in a groove 42 in the rear of the housing, is soldered to the bases of the contacts 27 to retain them. Each contact 25, 26 is of phosphor-bronze wire having a tail portion, (51, 65, Fig. 2, not shown) which fits tightly in an aperture in the rear of the housing, and a forward loop portion with a printed contactengaging nose (59, 69). On removal of the panel the free ends (55, 61) of the loops engage housing shoulders (57, 63) to prevent short circuit. An adjustment screw 93 is provided, whose rotation pushes a spring (97, Figs. 5 and 6, not shown), against the panel so altering the longitudinal position of the panel in the connector.
