Abstract

1,132,658. Valves. ELECTROLUX CORP. 24 April, 1967 [21 June, 1966; 6 July, 1966; 11 July, 1966; 11 Aug., 1966 (2); 29 Aug., 1966], No. 18752/67. Heading F2V. [Also in Division A4] A dual purpose suction cleaner nozzle has a nozzle body 10, Figs. 1 and 2, rotatable relatively to a suction conduit 16, 22 so that either a suction opening 32 for cleaning rugs or carpets, and bounded by a smooth surface 26, or a suction opening 34 for cleaning hard floor surfaces and bounded by brushes 40, 42, may be applied to the surface to be cleaned, and a valve 38 within the body 10 actuated by means responsive to relative rotation between the body 10 and the suction conduit 16, 22 to connect the latter to the suction opening 32 or 34 which is to be in contact with the surface to be cleaned, said means being inoperative to complete the actuation of the valve in response to relative rotation through approximately 90 degrees but effective in response to further relative rotation. The nozzle body 10 carries on one side a weight 70 which rotates the body 10 through 90 degrees, when the latter is raised from the floor to bring a pinion 52 into engagement with one of two diametrically opposed teeth 48, 50 on the conduit 16. Further rotation of the nozzle body 10 by the operator causes rotation of the pinion 52 by the tooth 48 or 50 thereby driving a shaft 54 and bevel gearing 60, 62 to rotate the valve member 38, the gearing ratios being such that the member 38 rotates through 180 degrees. In eight further embodiments (1) the teeth 48, 50 (Fig. 10, not shown) co-operate with a gear on a shaft connected through a 2:1 reduction gearing. to a shaft connected to the valve member through a 1:1 bevel gearing, (2) the teeth 48, 50 are replaced by a toothed ring 92 (Fig. 11, not shown), operating the valve through a sequence of Geneva and bevel gearing, (3) the valve member comprises a snap-action leafspring 240, Figs. 13 and 14, movable between positions closing suction passages 228, 234, respectively, by the actuation of pivoted levers 262, 264 by a tooth 278 on the suction conduit 244, (4) a snap-action leaf-spring valve member 302 (Fig. 22, not shown) is mounted in radial slots in two shafts carrying gears rotated, to actuate the valve by teeth on the suction conduit, (5) a leaf-spring valve member 460 (Figs. 24 to 30, not shown) is actuated by a rotary sleeve on the suction conduit having two pins between which the leaf-spring is engaged, (6) a leaf-spring valve member 518 (Fig. 31, not shown) has connected to its mid-section a stirrup engaged by a projection on a sleeve rotatable relatively to the suction conduit to actuate the valve, (7) a leaf-spring valve member 640 (Fig. 43, not shown) is actuated by rotation of the suction conduit and an oval ring thereon carrying a forked lever engaging the valve member, a camming projection on the suction conduit causing the oval ring and the suction conduit to move together to operate the lever, and (8) a leaf-spring valve member 740 (Fig. 50, not shown) is actuated by a further lever co-operating with a projection on the suction conduit.
