Abstract

1,131,614. Brake booster. GIRLING Ltd. 9 Nov., 1965 [18 Nov., 1964], No. 47364/65. Addition to 1,028,994. Heading F2F. A brake booster comprises a housing, a force input member acting on a force output member through a lever in the housing to apply an input force to the output member, a movable wall mounted in the housing or casing across which a pressure differential is developed to augment the input force, and a valve controlling the development of the pressure differential in response to movement of the lever, in which the input and output members are in axial alignment with the booster axis and the lever is formed by a part of the movable wall and is adapted to move angularly about a fulcrum on another part of the movable wall at a point spaced from the axis of the booster. In a first embodiment (Fig. 1), the movable wall comprises a member 14 with a peripheral diaphragm 15, the lever 18 being attached to the member 14 by a diaphragm 19 and abutting a pivot 21 detachably mounted in the member. Initially the chamber 12 is connected to the vacuum chamber 11 by passages 23, 24, 22, and vacuum valve 26. When the input rod 16 is moved the lever 18 moves clockwise to close valve 26 and open air valve 28 to admit air through filter 45 and hollow output rod 32. The differential pressure on the part of lever 18 defined by diaphragm 19 moves the lever back anticlockwise to close the air valve and to provide a "feel" force to the input rod proportional to the pressure differential. In a second embodiment (Fig. 3), the movable wall 55 is provided by two pressings 58, 59 clamping a diaphragm 54, the pressings having dished portions over an area 60 within which is provided a circular plate 62 forming the lever. The lever has part-spherical seatings engaging pins 63a on the wall to provide a fulcrum for the lever. The actuating valve is of spool form and when operated allows air to enter the chamber 57 through a filter 76.
