Abstract

1,123,341. Variable speed gear. S. HITCHINS. 29 April, 1965 [29 Jan., 1964; 21 Jan., 1965], Nos. 29902/63 and 2729/65. Headings F2D and F2Q. A continuously variable gear for a motor vehicle comprises an input shaft 2 carrying a variable throw eccentric disc 3 on which a ring 13 connected to an output shaft 47 is freely rotatable and means for holding the ring at successive points around the axis so that on rotation of the eccentric 3 the ring 13 tends to roll round an imagininary circle of radius equal to the throw of the eccentric. As shown the holding means comprise radial toothed rollers 18 which mesh with teeth 17 on the ring 13 and are selectively held by pawls 22 engaging teeth 23 on the rollers. A cam 24 rotatable with the input shaft 2 engages the pawls 22 with the rollers 18 to brake that roller which is adjacent the throw of the eccentric. Teeth 16 on the ring 13 mesh a pinion 31 on a carrier 33 fast with the eccentric disc 3 and a pinion 34 rotatably fast with the pinion 31 drives through gears 35 . . . 38 the planet carrier 43 of a bevel planet train having one side wheel 45 fast with the input shaft 2 and the other side wheel 46 fast with the output shaft 47. The eccentricity of the disc 3 is varied by moving axially a rock 8 which meshes a pinion 6 engaging a rock 5 on the disc 3. In Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) the holding means comprise blades (67) which are engaged with teeth (66) on the ring (65) by a cam (72) rotatable with the input shaft (54). The ring (65) is connected by an Oldham coupling to a disc (84) carrying planet pinions (86) which mesh a fixed ring gear (88) and an output sun gear (90). The eccentricity of the disc (55) is varied by axial movement of bush (60) having a pin (63a) engaging a helical slot (62) in a sleeve (59) fast with a pinion (58) meshing a pinion (57) engaging a rock (56) on the disc. The eccentricity of the disc may be varied in response to accelerator pedal position and vehicle speed.
