Abstract

1,075,592. Tube expanders. A. CHAMPION. March 30, 1965 [Jan. 7, 1965], No. 718/65. Heading B3J. A swaging tool, particularly for forming an internal annular groove in a pipe comprises a stepped hollow body 8, Fig. 3 (not shown), having a concentric stepped bore and with a transverse hole 9, 11 in each stepped portion, a stepped mandrel 1, Fig. 2 (not shown), fitting within the body and having in each stepped portion 3 a cam groove 6 in register with the corresponding transverse hole 11, and a hardened metal ball (not shown) in each hole which balls are cammed outwardly by the grooves 6, 7 to swage the pipe. Each stepped body portion may contain more than one ball. The body portion has a slot 12 for receiving a tommy bar which passes through a transverse hole in the mandrel. The tool may have more than two stepped portions.
