Abstract

1,072,065. Combination locks. J. SOLER MARTI; M. SOLER MARTI; J. SOLER MARTI: and A. SOLER MARTI. May 20, 1964 [April 24, 1964], No. 20852/64. Heading E2A. A combination lock comprises a transversely displaceable bar 40, a plurality of combination members 37 each with a notch 38 and each displaceable to bring its notch into alignment with the bar to allow entry of the bar into the notches when all the notches are aligned therewith, respective transmitting means engaged with each combination member for transmitting movement to and displacing the same, selector means including a first knob 1 rotatable to anyone of a plurality of rotational positions including a final rotational position, for selecting and rendering operative each said transmitting means in sequence, actuating means, including a depressible knob 2, for imparting movement to each selected transmitting means for transmission thereby to the respective member 37, an output member 45 linked to the bar 40 for movement between a first position when the bar is free of the notches 38 and a second position when the bar is disposed in the aligned notches, there being provided means, including a stop member 46 arranged to rotate with the knob 1, which in the final position of the knob 1 prevents movement of the output member 45 into its second position and which on rotation of the knob 1 back from its final position to the preceding one of its rotational positions, frees the member 45 for movement into its second position if all the notches are then also aligned for entry of the bar thereinto. In the lock shown the knob 1 is allowed to rotate in the direction of the arrow 12 by a ratched wheel 16 and pawl 17, and is held in each of its rotational positions by a spring loaded member 14 engaging the edges of an octagonal member 13. The knob 2 passes through an axial recess in the knob 1 and pressure on the knob 2 causes a member 4 with an oblique face 5 to raise a plate 8. Td release the lock the knob 1 is rotated so that a cylinder 32 having notches 19, 20 therein is rotated to. allow one of a series of spring loaded levers 21 to enter one of the notches. A tooth 24 on the lever 21 is thus engaged with one of a set of teeth on a strip member 25. The knob 2 is then pushed to raise the plate 8 and via crosspieces 26 and pins 27 to raise a plate 28 carrying the axle 23 on which the levers 21 are mounted. The rack 25 is thus lifted to cause rotation of a corresponding disc 37 and is held in its raised position by a spring loaded tooth 33. Further pushes on the knob 2 cause further rotation of the disc 37 until the notch 38 in the periphery thereof is in the position 39. The knob 1 is then rotated to its next position so that a different lever 21 engages with its associated member 25 and the knob 2 is then pushed the number of times required to move the notch 38 in the associated disc into the position 39. When all the discs 37 have had their notches 38 aligned in the positions 39 by suitable rotation and pushing of the knobs 1 and 2 respectively the notches all lie facing the bar 40 which is carried by a lever 41 connected to a plate 44 by a pin and slot connection. The knob 1 is then rotated in the direction of the arrow 18 so that the stop member 46 allows a lever 47 to turn and thus allow a plate 44 carrying the output member 45 to move downwards, under the action of gravity and springs 49 the bar 40 entering the notches 38. The member 45 on the plate 44 is lowered with the plate to unblock the mechanism which is actuated to allow unlocking of the lock. The plate 44 is returned to its original position as the knob 1 is rotated again to the position shown, and as the knob 1 is further rotated on to its first rotational position the member 46 turns the lever 47 to raise the plate 44 even further so that a hole 50 therein engages with a pin 51 on a lever 53 which disengages the teeth 33 from the members 25 so that the members 25 and discs 37 return to their original positions under spring action. The combination of the lock may be changed when the notches 38 are aligned with the bar by inserting a key 57 from the inside of the lock and rotating the key to pivot a lever 56 on which the axle 55 of the discs is mounted so that the discs are disengaged from the racks 25, and the bar 40 enters further into the notches 38. To set a new combination the knob 1 is rotated step by step and the knob 2 depressed the required number of times for each rotational position of the knob I exactly as when unlocking. When the combination has been set the axle 55 is again moved to re-engage the discs 37 with the members 25. In a further embodiment, not shown, the members 25 are replaced by discs spring-urged to a zero position. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,040,965.
