Abstract

1,063,300. Controlling burners; hot-water boilers. JUNKERS & CO. G.m.b.H. Oct. 31, 1963 [Nov. 15, 1962], No. 42964/63. Headings F4A, F4F and F4T [Also in Division F1] A starting device for a pulsating combustion chamber 10 comprises a mercury switch 37 actuated by a first diaphragm 34 subjected on one side to the pressure in the combustion chamber and on the other side to the pressure of the gas supply, the switch controlling a motor driving an air feed device 32 and a sparking or glow plug 33 mounted in the combustion chamber. At starting gas flows through a pipe 31 to the underside of the first diaphragm 34 causing the mercury switch 37 to energize the air feed device 32 and the sparking plug 33. The pressure built up by the air feed device is conveyed by a pipe 41 to the upper side of a second diaphragm 43 which opens a gas valve 42 to supply gas to the combustion chamber through a pipe 19<SP>1</SP> and a non-return valve 16. The average pressure of combustion in the combustion chamber is conveyed by a narrow bore pipe 50 to the upper side of the first diaphragm 34 and causes the mercury switch to de-energize the sparking plug and the air feed device 32. The vacuums produced by the pulsating combustion are transmitted by the non-return valve 16 and the fuel pipe 19<SP>1</SP> to the underside of the second diaphragm 43 and cause the gas valve 42 to open and close in synchronism with the combustion. If ignition does not occur a static air pressure is built up slowly in the combustion chamber and causes the mercury switch to deenergize the sparking plug and the air feed device. The gas valve 42 therefore closes and the starting process then repeats The repeating of the starting process is limited to six or eight times by a thermal delay 56 in the electric circuit. The gas valve 42 may be arranged to be opened at starting by partial vacuum instead of by pressure, the pipe 41 then branching from the suction side of the air device 32. The burner heats water flowing in a pipe 23 wound spirally around a resonant tube 12 and the combustion chamber 10. The flow of water is controlled by a non-closing valve 22 operated by a third diaphragm 26 subjected at opposite sides to the inlet and throat pressures of a Venturi in the water pipe 23. The diaphragm 26 also actuates a further gas valve 27. The gas is also controlled by a manually operated shutoff valve 20.
