Abstract

In coating a dispersion of magnetic material in a binder on to a support to form a layer thereon a supply means, e.g. an extruder head 11 is located in close proximity to the support 19 whilst this is continuously moved, and a magnetic field is maintained across the gap between the supply means and the support or a part lying close to or in contact with that face of the support which is opposite the face thereof on to which the dispersion is supplied. The magnetic lines of force are preferably arranged to be normal to the face of the support and they may extend over the major part of the width of the support but leave marginal portions. The support can be a web of material which forms a permanent support for the layer of dispersion or a roller or continuous belt from which the layer of dispersion can be removed. With an extruder type supply means, excess dispersion can be supplied to the extruder, the excess being removed from the extruder by a pump in a closed circuit arrangement (Fig. 3, not shown). Other forms of supply means illustrated are direct meniscus type and roller meniscus type coating apparatus with air knifes to control the thickness of the dispersion layer. The magnetic field can be produced from a permanent magnet or electromagnets with direct or alternating current. The magnetic layer may be aferro magnetic pigment dispersed into a solution of a film forming synthetic resin in a volatile solvent and may be applied to a base of plastics material, e.g. cellulose diacetate, cellulose triacetate, poly (vinyl chloride), poly (carbonates) and poly (ethylene terephthalate). After treatment such as stretching or calendering may be applied to the coated material.
