Abstract

Brake-applying mechanism of the kind wherein a brake is applied by repeated movements of a lever comprises a hand or other operating lever 18 acting through a driving pawl 26 on a ratchet wheel 6 which is integral with a sun-wheel 8 and is associated with a retaining pawl 28, the sun-wheel meshing with planet gears 9 which are mounted on an output member 10 and in turn mesh with a fixed annulus 3. Integral with the member 10 is a sprocket wheel 12 or a pulley on which is trained a chain 13 or a cable leading to a brake applying member, e.g. a pair of cables 15 linked to the chain by a shackle 14, so that the chain or cable is acted on through the planet gearing to give an additional mechanical advantage. Pawl 26 is urged towards the ratchet wheel by a spring 23 which also acts on a slider 22 having an abutment normally limiting return movement of the lever 18 by engaging a stop 31. When a button 27a is depressed by the driver, the slider 22 is moved so that the abutment clears the stop, allowing lever 18 to move further whereby a cam surface 34 acts on a follower 35 to lift pawl 28 to release the ratchet wheel and hence release the brake.
