Abstract

1,037,033. Respiratory apparatus. COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd. May 3, 1963 [May 8, 1962], No. 17647/62. Heading A5T. A respiratory device for use in atomospheres contaminated with carbon monoxide, comprises chambers 12 and 13 containing drying agent and communicating with the atmosphere via filter gauzes 27 and 28, chamber 14 communicating with chambers 12 and 13 via grids 15 and 15a and containing a catalyst capable of assisting in the oxidation of carbon monoxide in the atmosphere to carbon dioxide as the air passes through the chamber 14, and a mouthpiece 23 communicating with chamber 14. A third chamber 16 containing drying agent may be present between chamber 14 and mouthpiece 23 which chamber 16 prevents any moisture in exhaled air reaching chamber 14. The device may also include inhaling valve 24, 25 and exhaling valve 26 (Fig. 3, not shown). The perforations in the grids 15, 15a vary in size. The device may be provided with a fastening to fit on to a miner's cap-lamp battery.
