Abstract
1,017,853. Web coating apparatus. BATTELE-INSTITUT E. V. May 1, 1964 [May 2, 1963], No. 18213/64. Heading D1L. Apparatus for electrostatically flocking, by scattering flock fibres on to passing adhesive plies, comprises an elongated rotating screen drum 1 covered with a sheet metal hood 2 and maintained at a high potential by a suitable source; the drum rotating on a hollow shaft containing sieve-like perforations and providing a constant supply of flock fibres and the hood being of bell shaped section with its edge 4,16 drawn outwardly in an upward direction and rolled in slightly; a grating 3 inserted in the opening in the hood, the hood and grating being connected to the same pole of the high-voltage source as the screening drum, and a base 11, over which the adhesive plies 10 pass, connected to the other pole of the high-voltage source. Preferably the edge portion of the hood extending in the direction of movement of the plies is drawn out considerably further than the other edge portions. The flock fibres are fed to the inside of drum 1 by a worm conveyer 13 in the hollow shaft 12 said worm conveyer being in communication with feed funnels 14 fitted with agitators 15. The grating 3 comprises a metal frame and can be vibrated horizontally. Since the drum, the hood and the grating are all connected to the same potential there is no electric field in the space 6 and the fibres therein are subject only to gravity and centrifugal force so that the amount of fibres dropping through the openings in the screen depends only on the rotary speed and the filling of the drum so that if the degree of filling is kept the same and the speed varied the amount of flock can be determined exactly.
