Abstract

The damper has a base (1) with an axis (8) fixed by screws (3) nuts (4) and a counter plate (2). It has a movable section containing a felt (6) and a curved plate (5) to follow the angle of the head (9) of the guitar with respect to the neck (10), articulated following the axis (8) along the action of the user on the curved plate. The damper can have springs (7) with their ends on the base and the curved plate. The spring force retains the curved plate in two positions.

Description

A problem may be encountered with some musicians who always want to improve their musical genres and special effects. The following subject particularly concerns guitarists on electric instruments. They sometimes use scarves or rags to reduce certain parasites during specific musical game techniques such as (tapping), hammer technique on the handle with the right hand, for a right-handed person, and certain rhythmic patterns.

The invention is therefore a musical accessory for electric guitars. It has the effect of suffocating the strings (empty), that is to say the strings not struck for these games used, thus eliminating the parasites transmitted to the microphones of the guitar. Being attached to the head (9) of the guitar with screws and nuts, the accessory does not degrade the musical instrument. Its movable part acts at the level of the first box of the handle (10) by pressing a felt (6) on the strings (13) in order to absorb unwanted resonances.

The movable part can have two position states, one of which may be called -in position- and the other in state -high-, ie in non-operation. The technique adopted, for the pressure of the movable part on the sleeve and the non-operating state, uses springs (7); the moving part is fixed on an axis (8) allowing mobility of an arc of a circle.

The user activates the mobile part according to the choice and the time and at will by tilting it manually. It suffices to switch it for example from the raised position to the suffocation position with a gesture and the movable part will keep this new desired position thanks to the traction of the springs (7). This accessory could possibly be called a string damper.

Figures 1 and 2 (side view from front view) show the accessory in the suffocation position. It is mounted on the head (9) of the guitar by tightening with the fixed part, i.e. the base (1) with the plate (2) using two screws (3) and wing nuts ( 4). The mobile part consists of a bent plate (5) containing an absorbent felt (6).

The springs (7) have their ends on the base (1) and the bent plate (5).

Figures 3 and 4 show the accessory in the raised position. The mobile part stops on the fixed part thanks to two stops (11) belonging to the base (1). The pressure of the moving part on the base is also obtained by the springs (7).

Parts (1), (2) and (5) were made with epoxy, used for printed circuits in electronics, offering a very high solidity with a minimum of weight. The angles of the parts (1) and (5) were made by assembly and glueing. The felt (6) was made with thick carpet to better absorb the resonances of the strings (13). The springs (7) are two in number, in order to balance the axis of rotation (8) of the movable part, distributing the desired mechanical pressure. Finally, the use of screws (3), two in number, on each side of the accessory, and nuts (4) of the butterfly type, facilitates installation and removal by the user. The head (9), the neck (10), the string locking assembly (12) and the strings (13) are an integral part of the guitar.

Cet -étouffoir à cordes- à ressorts nécessite peu de pièces. This spring-type cord damper requires few parts.

Screws, nuts and springs already exist on the market. All that's left is to make the epoxy parts. This material is not expensive and is easily found, given the extent of the use of printed circuits in all kinds of household appliances and electronics. It can be produced and assembled by hand or industrially, at low cost, and distributed by companies distributing musical instruments and accessories.
