Abstract

An ultrasonic machining tool has a working face which contains cutting edges sepd. from one another by hollow parts of constant width. The working face seen in transverse section in relation to the cutting edges presents the form of a toothing along the profile of the face. The tool is constituted pref. by a metallic rod capable of being animated in a longitudinal vibratory movement at ultrasonic frequencies, one of the ends being the working face. In operation, the working face of the tool and a face to be machined of a piece are placed opposite and applied against one another and a static force is exerted in a first direction perpendicular to the opposed faces, while vibrations at ultrasonic frequency are generated to cause the cutting edges to penetrate into the piece pushing the material of the piece into the hollow parts of the working face of the tool. The tool and the piece are then displaced w.r.t. one another in a second direction different from the first to induce shearing of the material pushed into the hollow parts. No abrasive is fed between the piece and the tool. Compared to existing ultrasonic machining tools, the tool according to the invention has cutting properties. Compared to existing processes including electro-erosion, electro-chemical processes and milling, the process according to the invention is more rapid, allows non-conducting materials to be used, does not require great electrical power with the stresses which result and makes it possible to reproduce the same relief on different parts with great precision.
