Abstract

The plain journal bearing is self aligning and has an inner ring with a spherical outer surface which is supported in a matching housing. Any radial play between the inner ring and the housing is taken up by elastomeric O-rings which fit in grooves in the housing. The O-rings prevent chatter between inner ring and housing and also reduce noise. When the bearing has to carry very high loads, metal balls replace the O-rings in the grooves. In yet another form a stack of soft metal washers is used inside a sheet metal housing.
