Abstract

The thermal transition element (16) for the shaft of a superconducting rotor has a hot end designed to be fixed to a support rotating at ordinary temp. The element (16) has a cold end fixed to a central part of the rotor. The rotor being fitted with superconducting windings. The transition element ensures the mechanical connection between the rotor and the rotating support. A ferrule joins together both ends of the thermal transition element. A cooling pipe is in contact with the ferrule and permits circulation of a cooling fluid towards the hot end. The ferrule is made up of an exterior ferrule (48) which is clamped against an interior ferrule (44) so that both ferrules are submitted to opposing compression and tension forces. These forces acting in the plane perpendicular to the axis of the ferrules. One of the ferrules has a groove (52) cut in its face which presses against the other ferrule. This groove permits circulation of cooling liquid. The depth of the groove near to the cold end is made sufficiently shallow to prevent circulation in opposite directions in the two parts of the groove.
