Abstract

Gas tight closure intended for openings of large dia. In a nuclear installation, where the opening must frequently be opened and closed, comprises a flexible band of width exceeding the opening dia. reeled/unreeled between two parallel rollers; the rollers are mounted on opposite sides of a frame which has a central aperture between them; the frame is mounted over the opening or penetration in the vessel etc., so that this aperture is generally central to the opening in the vessel. The band contains an aperture or several successive apertures of different sizes, which are moved to the central position to form an access hole. The band is sealed at the edges by flexible strips. Used for frequent access, esp. to clean conditions areas, e.g. during the installation and removal of components in the protective gas region of a liquid metal cooled reactor.
