Abstract

Polymer films are dyed by heating in contact with a dispersion dye with sublimation temp. 150-220 degrees C, to cause sublimation and diffusion into the surface. Used for mfr. of light filters, storage of fingerprints, signatures, documents, etc., prepn. of transparencies for projection or for photocopying. The colours and images are permanent and cannot be removed without destruction of the film. The dispersion dye is applied as an aq. dispersion contg polymeric thickener directly to the film, or to a carrier which is then heated in contact with the film. A one- or two-component diazotype coating may be applied to the film or carrier, exposed to light and developed to produce an azo dye before heating.
