Abstract

Fuel is drawn from a reservoir by a pump and delivered into the base of a vessel which contains an air cushion above the fuel. The vessel is closed so that air in it is compressed as the fuel level rises. Fuel flows from the base of the vessel to the carburettor. Periodic variation in the pump delivery results in variation in the volume in the vessel so that the pressure of the air compressed in it varies. The compressibility of the air tends to even out the flow fluctuations and maintain an even flow to the carburettor. A pressure relief valve in the side of the vessel allows excess fuel to flow back to the reservoir.
