Abstract

In the lowered position of the cap, a s tatic seal is made by a skirt dependent from a ring projecting from the cap's periphery; in the raised position of the cap (during rotation) a dynamic seal is made to close the passage below the skirt. Pref. a supply of neutral pressurised gass can be injected into the space between the top of the vessel and the cap proper to provide a supplementary seal during replacement of either the dynamic or the static seals. The dynamic seal is pref. a liquid (esp. a liquid metal) bath erected on the vessel in which is immersed a sleeve dependent from the ring.
