Abstract

A hydrocarbon-containing mixture is prepared from a major amount by weight of a residue-contng. fuel, flash distillation fuel, slate oil or crude oil, and a minor amount by weight of an oil-soluble copolymer of ethylene and one or more substituted ethylenes, where, in the presence of one or more saturated side chains, each of these side chains must contain 18 carbon atoms the copolymer has an average number molecular weight of >800, but is not a dipolymer with an average number molecular weight of >3000 of ethylene and a vinyl or a hydrocarbon-substituted vinyl ester of a carboxylic acid. - The copolymers reduce the pour point of the oils. They can be used in crude oil in oil-wells, to counteract the formation of paraffin deposits, and can be added while the oil is flowing. They can also be used to improve the flow of oils in pipe-lines.
