Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE

A roller mill for grinding grain including two rollers having their axes parallel to one another; each roller having a first constant diameter along part of its length, a second smaller constant diameter along another part of its length, adjacent to the part having the first diameter a groove around the circumference at the junction of the two parts, and a partition disposed at the junction of the two parts, the lower end of the partition entering in the groove in each roller to separate grain being feed into the roller mill so that large grain can be directed to the second smaller diameter part of the rollers and small grain can be directed to the first diameter part of the rollers.

Description

~ ~7565~3 This invention relates to a roller mill for crushing grain.
The prior art roller mills have two spaced rollers, the spacing of which can be altered so that large grain such as corn can be accommodated or smaller grain such as barley or oats can be accommodated. For feeding animals there is a requirement for a feed mixture containing corn, barley and oats. The proportions of the ingredients are obtained by a grain portion-ing apparatus, however, when the spacing between the two rollers of the ro1-ler mill is adjusted to satisfactorily grind barley or oats, the corn is pulverized to a powder, whereas when the spacing between the rollers is sized to satifactorily grind corn, the barley or oats passes between the rollers without being ground. Corn, therefore, can not be processed at the same time as barley and oats.
There is therefore a requirement to be able to grind measured quantities of grain of different sizes in one roller mill to achieve a mixed ground feed.
In this invention, the roller mill i5 provided with i~entical rollers, with one part of each roller being of one diameter and another part being of a slightly smaller diameter. A partition is provided at right angles to the roller axis at the intersection of the large and small dia- -meters for guiding a large size grain to the smaller diameter roller part and small slze grain to the larger diameter roller par~. Two different roller grinding surface spacings can therefore be utilized at one time with the one setting of the roller mill and hence large and small grain can be ground at the same time.
Preferably, a groove is undercut at the junction of the large and small diameters so that the lower end of the partition can enter the groove on each roller and provide a good separation of grain before grind-. .....

Figure 1 is R plan view of an embodiment of the rollers of the roller mill of this invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the rollers of Figure l;
Figure 3 is a front elevational view, partly in section, of a feed proportioning apparatus including the roller mill of this invention;
Figure 4 is a side elevational view of the drive for the roller mill of Figure 3; and Figure 5 is a side elevational view of the opposite end of the roller mill to that as shown in Figure 4.
Referring to the drawings, one embodiment of the roller mill consists of a pair oE rollers 1 and 2 arranged on parallel axis on driven shafts 3 and 4.
The diameter of the rollers is larger at one end than the other, the larger diameter being indicated by B and the smaller diameter by C. A groove 5 is undercut between the large diamet~r and the small dia-meter on each roller and a partition plate 6 is secured above the rollers such that the lower end of the plate enters the groove S and provides a positive separation between the large and small diameters of the rollers.
The roller mill can conveniently be used with a proportioning apparatus the outline of whlch is shown in Figure 3, the largest size grain coming from proportioning unit 7 and possibly 8 and the smaller size grains coming from units 9 and 10 and possibly 8, the disposition of the grain through unit 8 depending upon the position of the hinged plate 11. The proportioning apparatus and hinged plate 11 is known in the art aod d~ e5 not form part ot this invention.

v ~5651~3 The drum roller mill is driven by a conventional drive as shown schematically in Figures 4 and 5, the main drive pulley 12 driving one roller which in turn drives the other roller through pulleys 13 and 14 and the belt 15, utilizing an idler pulley 16. Adjusting mechanism 17 which is well known in the art, is used to adjust the spacing of the rollers which is done by varying the distance A of Figure 2.
Although the rollers of this mill have been shown as having two different diameters, it is conceivable that, if there are more than two different sizes of grain to grind, more than two different diameters on the rollers could be used in the mill.
It is thus seen that this invention provides a roller mill which is efficient in operation and enables the grinding of different sizes of grain in one operation.
