PRESSE A BANDAGES PNEUMATIQUES

<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>

<Desc/Clms Page number 17>
<Desc/Clms Page number 18>

"Press for the vulcanization of pneumatic tires". the present invention relates and! General as indicated to a press for the vulcanization of pneumatic tires and more particularly to a press for the vulcanization of pneumatic tires, incorporating an improved press loading mechanism.
@
Pneumatic tire presses have heretofore been loaded by hand and by means of a wide range of so-called automatic loading mechanisms which position the pneumatic tire to be vulcanized on the lower section of the press mold. During the operation of a manual loading, the person in charge of the pressa must bring an unvulcanized cylindrical pneumatic tire onto a

It is evident that the loading mechanism requires large and complex machinery to lift the unvuloanized pneumatic tire from the loading column and then place it in clean alignment on the lower section of the mold. The loading mechanism must therefore be removed before the press can close on the pneumatic tire held by the forming membrane. Thanks to the present invention, it has been put

for loading.
Another object is to provide a press for the vulcanization of pneumatic tires in which there is incorporated a mandrel of the type with expandable plates, designed to engage under the upper bead of an unvuloanized pneumatic tire and to position and thus enter. the latter in proper alignment both on the upper section and on the lower section of the mold.
Another object is to provide a press for the vulcanization of pneumatic tires comprising a pneumatic tire loading mandrel incorporated in the upper section of the mold and which can also be used to remove the pneumatic tire from the lower section of the mold afterwards. the vulcanization cycle and thus unload the press.
Yet another object is to provide a self-loading press ensuring improved centering of the pneumatic tire with respect to the two upper and lower sections of the mold, as well as improved centering of the membrane in the pneumatic tire,
Another object is to provide a press for the vulcanization of pneumatic tires having the aforementioned improved loading characteristics and not requiring an attachment device, or an accessory loading mechanism.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will emerge clearly from the description which follows.
With a view to achieving the objects mentioned above, the invention therefore comprises the characteristics specified entirely below and particularly underlined in the appended claims, the following description and the drawings attached to the present specification setting out in detail

PNEUMATIC BANDAGE PRESS
The basic design of the press may be identical to that of the well-known "Autoform" press, mentioned above, and is clearly shown in figure 6. Referring to this figure, it is visible that lepres- se includes a base 1 having on its sides two vertical plates 2 each provided with a vertical guide groove 1 communicating with the upper edge,!.
The press head or beam 5, which extends between the vertical plates 2, is supported in such a way that it performs a horizontal and vertical movement along the surface 4 and the groove 1 respectively by means of rollers 6. the upper section 7 of the mold or the segments of the mold, insofar as the press is of the double type, equipped with molds arranged side by side, is mounted in a pendulum manner under the beam or head 5.
The vertical movement of the press head and the lateral movements required to open the press are caused, as shown in Figure 6, by two motor gears 2 mounted on either side of the press and which can be controlled. for rotation by drive pinions of gear reducers 10 controlled by a motor and in engagement with the driving gears.
These motor gears are connected to the press head by means of side links 11, so that when the motor gears rotate, the head 5 is moved, being guided by the surfaces 2 and ± of the side plates 2. when visible that the press can be opened in the position shown in figure 6 by the clockwise rotation of the driving gears 9 and can be closed by the counterclockwise rotation of these same motor gears 9. The lower section 13 of the mold is

mounted on a plate 14 placed at the top of the frame 15 fixed to box 1.
Referring additionally to Figure 4, it can be seen that the lower section 13 of the mold is

pneumatic tires. The cap 45 is connected at point 50 to the rod 51 of a piston and cylinder assembly 52. mounted on the top plate 30 of the head 5.
The lower end of the tube 44 for removing the pneumatic tires is closed with respect to the plunger 40 by the sleeve 54 provided with a packing ring 55 controlled by a spring. It is thus visible that variations in the pressure prevailing in the tube 44 for the removal of the pneumatic tires on the opposite sides of the piston 43 cause the extension and the retraction of the plunger 40 provided with the nose 41 at its end.
A tube 57, intended for activating the plates of the sectors of a mandrel and the top of which is provided with a stop plate 38 having a lateral extension connected at point 59 to the rod 60 of the assembly piston and cylinder 61, surrounds tube 44 for removal of pneumatic tires * The rod end of the piston and cylinder assembly 61 is mounted on a support plate 62 attached to the cap 45 and movable of course with this one. It can therefore be seen that the elongation of the piston and cylinder assembly 61 causes the downward movement of the tube 57 for the actuation of the plates of the sectors of the mandrel relative to the tube 44 for the removal of the pneumatic tires. .
With particular reference to FIG.
1, it is visible that the lower end of the tube 57 for activating the sector plates is provided with a ring 63 and four rods 64 extending vertically, spaced apart from each other by quadrants and protruding downward from ring 63 through openings 65 in flange 66 extending radially from the bottom of tube 44 for removal of

offset or off-center 71-branches ê2 and 90 are racooned by a spindle 93 at the upper end 94 of the respective plates 95 of the sectors of the mandrel. The lower links 88 of each pair of links include
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
branches forming internally fourohues parts which surround flanges 97 provided in the groove of each sector plate and which are connected thereto by pins 98.
The sector plates 95, which form the segments of the mandrel, are yellowed from the outer edge of the ring 99 which rest in a recess 100 of the top lug ring 20 when the mandrel is in a fully retracted position. The heel of the sector plates 95, designated 101, closely matches the vertically extending shoulder 42 provided by the nose 41 of the plunger 40, when the latter is retracted. Of course, the plunger can be lengthened slightly in order to allow the plates of the sectors of the mandrel to pivot into their open positions engaging the tires.
The plan profile, as well as the positions which the plates 95 of the sectors of the mandrel can occupy, are represented by dashed lines in FIG. 2.
It can be seen that the vertical displacement of the tube 57 for the actuation of the plates of the sectors of the mandrel with respect to the tube 44 for the removal of the pneumatic bands o constrains the plates 95 of the aeoteura of the mandrel to pivot into positions represented by mixed lines and designated by the number 103 in FIG. 1. The extent of this relative vertical movement of the two tubes 57 and 54 naturally exerts an action of control on the diameter engaging the tires @ atic of the lines. @ chuck elements in their extended positions.
It should be noted that the grooves 78 and 81, provided at the lower ends of the segments of the mandrel, can be changed: the retort indicated in point 104. in order to allow the lower split links 88 of each pair of links to pivot. in the almost position
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
vertical required for maximum extension of the sector plates.
Referring again to Figure 1, it is; visible that the plates 95 of the sectors can thus be forced to extend below the upper bead 106 of the unvulcanized pneumatic tire 107, shown in this figure. The edges 99 of the sector plates then move under the slight inwardly oriented shoulder of the upper bead 106 which is a characteristic of unvulcanized tires. It is obvious that in preformed pneumatic tires or in truck tires with shoulders, the shoulder provided at the upper heel may even be larger.
Likewise, it is certain that when the edges 99 of the plates of the sectors of the mandrel engage with the unvulcanized pneumatic tire, it automatically centers the upper stud 106 with respect to the upper ring at ergo 20. In the case of preformed or C-shaped pneumatic tires, the top of the plates of the sectors may be provided with a shoulder or with an centering ridge engaging on the upper bead. Thus, for gripping or lifting unvulcaised pneumatic tires, the plates of the sectors of the mandrel can be brought to the position provided for the edge 99. represented by mixed lines and designated by the number 108.
However, in order to remove the molded pneumatic tire from the press, the plates of the mandrel sectors are normally extended further to the position for the edges 99, represented by mixed lines and designated by the number. 109, i.e. more fully below the molded bead 110 of the shaped pneumatic tire.
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
OPERATING CYCLE OF THE PNEUMATIC BANDAGE PRESS.
Referring now to Figure 6, it can be seen that the pneumatic tire press can be designed such that the press head 2 moves vertically through the groove 3 and forward along the path. upper guide surface 4 of the side plates 2 for the purpose of positioning the head and the mold 1 supported hanging down beneath it in a forwardly offset manner, thus freeing the lower mold 13. which allows a top loading. In conventional "Auto-drill" presses, the upper mold section moves vertically and rearwardly so as to allow loading of the released lower mold section.
On the contrary, as shown in Figure 6, the right side of the press can be considered, as shown, as the front of the press and the left side, as the rear of the press.
A rising column 115 may be provided at the front of the press for the purpose of supporting the unvulcanized pneumatic tires 116 and 117 arranged vertically one above the other for loading into the mold. formed by the lower and upper sections 7 and 15 of the mold. In this way, the press worker can place two oaroasses of unvulcanized pneumatic tires at the front of each mold, so as to obtain a known vulcanization. "vulcanization carried out at random *.
The riser may include lower and elastic closing claws 118, projecting radially and designed to engage the upper bead of the carcass or unvulcanized pneumatic tire 117, in the same manner as described for the riser. of the patent application
US of Heston et al. A 0010008 rising upper 120,
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
vertically movable and supported by a pneumatic cylinder designated by the number 119, also includes several elastic closing claws 121 engaging under the heel, mounted on arms 122 pivoting at point 123 on the movable base 124 of the column rising supérisure.
The pivotal movement of the arms 122 on the pivots 123 can be performed by the piston and cylinder assembly 125 so as to radially move the arms 122. When these arms
122 are in their innermost positions. radial, the press worker can then fit an unvuloanized pneumatic baling carcass 1 on the upper rising column and force the deposition of this carcass in a known manner on the claws 118 so that it is @@ suspended telescopically on the pneumatic cylinder 119 and is supported from the upper heel,
The retraction of the piston and cylinder assembly 125 can then be initiated radially to move the arms.
122 externally, so that the second unvulcanized pneumatic tire 116 can then wander resting on the arms so as to be gripped by its upper heel in a position of suspension from the claws 121. In this way, two pneumatic tires can therefore be placed in front of each mold.
When the press opens, the upper section of the mold 1 moves vertically and then laterally to the position shown in FIG. 6 and it is visible that the axis of the upper section of the mold 1 is maintained. bare in a vertical position by an auxiliary cam groove made in the plates 2 and by a guide fixed to the press head. Reference may be made in this connection to U.S. Patent No. 3,065,499 to Mallory et al.
When the upper section of the mold occupies the position shown

when the plates of the sectors of the mandrel are cleanly fitted to the upper bead of the volcanized tlcaz pneumatic tire L16, the piston and cylinder assembly 12 j can preaaat be extended so as to retract the arms 122 and the piston and cylinder assembly z can then be retracted by rolling: - before the entire mandrel, so as to place the upper bead of the unvulcanized pneumatic tire 116 in clean alignment with the lug ring of the upper aeoti6n of the mold, as shown in figure 7 .
At this unewa-4 1 * piston and cylinder assembly 119 can be retracted by lowering the arms 122 to position the claws 121 in horizontal alignment with the closing claws 118, so as to grip the upper heel of the unvulcanized lower pneumatic tire 117 in order to raise it and load it to the

during the next cycle
Referring to Figures 7 and 8, where the unvulcanized pneumatic tire 116 is supported by the segments of the mandrel and is in alignment with the lug pen on the upper section of the mold, it can be seen that the press has initiated its movement. closing.
the press head. 2. moves laterally along the guide surface ± and then vertically downward in the grooves 3 and thus can bring the unvulcanized pneumatic tire 116 into proper alignment with the lug ring 16 of the bottom Boeotian of the mold , as shown in Figure 8. At this moment the press stops its closing movement and a pressure is applied inside the cavity 18, which forces the membrane 17 to extend vertically into the pneumatic tire. vulcanized.
Under medium pressure, the membrane engages inside the unvulcanized pneumatic tire and then maintains the latter in its aligned position, as shown in Figure 9.
At this point, the plunger 40 extends downward a distance of approximately six inches (152.4 mm) and the piston and cylinder assembly 61 is then fully retracted by moving the actuation tube vertically. relative to the tube 44 for the removal of the pneumatic tires, which forces the ring 67 to rest against the round of the flange 66, as shown in FIG. 1, bringing the plates 95 of the sectors back into the '100 (Figure 10).
The plunger is then retracted and the nose
41 thereof engages in a molded recess 131 provided in the membrane and facilitating the centering of the latter relative to the sections of the mold and to the unvulcanized pneumatic tire. the pressure in the membrane is then
<Desc / Clms Page number 17>
increased when the plunger is retracted, as shown in Figure 11, and the press continues its closing movement, in that the press head and the upper mold section descend and shape the pneumatic banding, as shown in figure 12. The press is then fully closed (figure 13) and remains in this position during the vulemmization process.
As soon as the timer has indicated the completion of the vulcanization cycle, the opening cycle is consecrated by the downward extension of the plunger 40 and simultaneously the extension of the plates of the sectors up to the posi - tion 109 underlying the upper bead of the tire, this position being represented by dashed lines in FIG. 1.
The extension of the plates of the sectors is of course carried out by the lengthening of the piston and cylinder assembly 61. the plunger 40 continues its downward stroke with a view to folding the membrane 17 into the cavity 18 and the press therefore begins. to open, when the press opens, the plunger 40 is raised but the sector plates are still maintained below the upper bead of the vulcanized tire. When the press head has reached the position at the top of the groove 3, an inclined discharge conveyor 135 can be pivoted into place by the piston and cylinder assembly 136, as shown in Figure 15.
The rod
137 of the assembly 36 is connected to an elbow arm 138 causing the pivoting of the arm 139 on the pivot 140.
When the dump conveyor is thus properly positioned, the piston and cylinder assembly 52 can be lengthened by allowing the dump bar 142 to move to point 143 on the shaped pneumatic tire, releasing the latter from the upper section 1. of the mold.

It is quite certain that the upper lug ring 20 can be mounted so that it moves with the housing 76 of the aegments, as well as aged the fasteners 144 shown in Figure 2, in order to ensure a release. - proper operation of the pneumatic tire from the upper section of the mold, when the pedestrian and linear assembly 52 is stressed.
Referring now to Fig. 16. The piston and cylinder assembly 61 can be retracted so as to bring the sector plates back into the recess of the lug ring, thereby allowing the tire to fall on. the blowdown conveyor 135. The pneumatic tire can then slide through a post-vulcanization inflation machine or be fed onto an exhaust conveyor perpendicular to the plane of Fig. 16. When the vulcanized pneumatic tire has left the press, the discharge conveyor 135 is moved away and the press head is returned to its position shown in FIG. 6.
The claws 121, provided on the arms 122 and engaging on the upper bead of the unvulcanized pneumatic tire 117, are raised so as to position the next unvulcanized pneumatic tire and cause the latter to grip by the plates. sectors, as shown in figure 6,
The operating oyol is then repeated. During the vulcanization of the proohain unvulcanized pneumatic tire, the. The press worker can therefore place two additional unvulcanized tires on the riser 115.
As can be seen from the foregoing description, there is provided a press for the vulcanization of pneumatic tires, in which the latter are brought into proper alignment with the upper section of the mold.

by the loading ribs and the fracture 100nvement of the press properly aligns the pneumatic tire with the lower section of the mule, such that the tire will internally receive the membrane. In this way, it is ensured that the pneumatic tire and the diaphragm are rarely centered in the press before the press closes at all times.
It is also quite certain that the radial movement of the sectors of the mandrel can be modified so that they are adapted to the pneumatic bands having beads of different sizes.

sizes. Likewise, instead of a vertical alignment of two tire risers, a horizontal alignment can be used to position the tire so that it is gripped by the sector plates.
