<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

The present improvements relate to operating devices for cables with several cores, in particular to electric targets with three cores of the oil-filled type as described in the main patent which relates especially to sealing elements which can be used in the course of production. junction.
According to the present improvements., 1 * sealing element comprises a chamber delimited by a wall of flexible rubber or rubbery material or more generally of elastic material provided at one end with an orifice which fits over the sheath of the cable and having at its other end orifices which fit into the flanges of the cable respectively,
and a flexible tube extending from this chamber to a sleeve

cable after its establishment * In such a sealing element due to the use of the flexible tube, it is necessary that the sleeve of. operation or the similar member is established in two parts respectively secured to the sheaths of the cables to be joined and connected to each other after the completion of the joint.
One of the essential aims of the present improvements is to avoid precisely the need to provide a similar two-part operating sleeve, the member in question being in one piece and ultimately connected to the two cable sheaths *
According to the present improvements, the flexible tube provided in the construction described in the main patent with a view to establishing communication between the chamber with a wall of rubber or other flexible material and the operating sleeve or equivalent member is replaced by a valve mounted in the chamber. bedroom wall.
During the process of joining the cables, this valve remains closed, but after the completion of the seal, this valve opens, so that oil can flow freely between each of the cable sheaths and the joining sleeve or its equivalent. This valve may require manual control for opening or it may have a construction such that it opens automatically upon admission of pressurized oil to the operating sleeve or equivalent member.
For ease of understanding and industrial production of the device comprising the present improvements, it is described below in more detail with reference to the appended drawing which shows, by way of example and partly in section, a three-way cable. souls as well as the joining members associated with it, it being understood that the complementary cable which must be joined to it is equipped with similar members.
As shown, the cable 1 is provided with a junction sleeve 2 which forms an envelope surrounding the plotted joint.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
this sleeve 2. being ultimately connected to each cable sheath by a push-fit joint, only one of which is visible in the drawing.
However, for the formation of the seal, the sleeve 2 is retracted on one of the sides of the cables. Each cable sheath and the oil channels as well as the insulation in which the cores are embedded are cut back, then the sealing end provided according to the present improvements for each cable is put into position. This sealing end comprises a chamber 5 provided at its left end (looking at the drawing) with an orifice of dimensions allowing it to match the sheathed cable 1.
For this purpose, the orifice in question preferably takes the form of a sleeve 6 and, as the sealing element is made of a flexible material with a considerable degree of elasticity., This sleeve encloses the sheath of the cable. 1. The cores 4. of the cable protrude: through individual openings forming the mouths of the chamber 5. These orifices themselves have the form of sleeves 7 enclosing the cores 4 of the cable * Due to the clamping exerted by the sleeves 6 and 7, any passage of oil from inside the cable sheath is prevented and any loss of oil during the joining operation is therefore avoided, or at least reduced to a minimum.
As shown, suitable clips can be fitted around the sleeves ¯6 and 7.
After the joint has been completed and the sleeve 2¯ has been engaged over the respective cable sheaths, it is necessary to re-establish a possibility of oil flow. It is. provided for this purpose in the wall of the. chamber ¯5 a valve 8 which, as indicated above, may be of such a nature that it requires manual control or, on the contrary, that it operates automatically
In the example shown, the valve 8 is controlled by hand and comprises a bearing 9 provided with a collar 10 which bears against the internal wall of the chamber 5, this bearing 2 being threaded externally and held in position by a nut 11.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The central orifice 12 of the bearing 3. is provided with a shoulder 13 on which bears a plug 14. This plug is screwed into the bearing 3. and is provided with a rod 15, so that it can be removed at using an adjustable wrench or other suitable wrench.
To perform the joining operation, the plug 14 is screwed into the bearing 9, so that the valve 8 remains closed.
At the end of this operation, the spanner is inserted through the spanner 16 for the oil inlet provided in the sleeve 2, and the plug 14 is removed, which establishes communication between the chamber 5 and the sleeve. 2.
In practice, it is necessary for the valve 8 to be located substantially at the top of the chamber 1 when the latter is held in position, the normal state according to which the cables to be joined are substantially horizontal being assumed here. However, the relative positions of the individual cores of the cable cannot be known until the cable is opened for operation. As a result, in order to properly position the valve 8, there is a choice between the two. following ways of proceeding:
- One is to provide a selection of sleeves, in other words of chambers 3 already provided respectively with a valve in a different position - Thus, for example, a sleeve such as may include a valve suitably placed to correspond to the position ' or in the case where one cable core is at the top while, in another, it is placed so as to suit the case where both cores are at the top. The second way to proceed is to assemble the valve 8. after the cable has been opened. This mounting is easily accomplished by drilling a hole in the wall of the chamber 5 after the exact position of the latter has been determined by examining the location of the cable cores where the latter is open.
The construction details can be modified without departing from what has just been said, in the field of technical equivalences.
