<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

Phonographic player fitted with a member which, when the player is fitted, rests on the disc.
Some phonographic players have a member which, when the player is fitted, rests on the disc.
The movement (circumferential speed) of the disc can modify; the position of the organ, for example rotating or folding it, so that the needle of the player rests on the record.
The purpose of this known form of construction is to prevent as much as possible damage to the reader's needle, often formed by a very fragile point of sapphire or tungsten, while the reader is out of service.
In addition, this member makes it possible to prevent too sudden contact between the tip of the needle and the disc during the setting.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
reader's place. As a result of the movement of the disc, this protection member moves away from the initially occupied protection position and the needle gradually comes into contact with the disc without the pressure significantly exceeding the normal operating pressure.
The invention relates to such a phonographic player, in which the aforementioned member fulfills, in the first place, another function than that described above.
The invention is based on the idea of using a member which facilitates the positioning of the phonographic player, so that this can be carried out without difficulty with poor lighting or even in the dark and which automatically guides the needle in the first groove of the disc.
According to the invention, the member is combined with a part which protrudes laterally from the needle, and which is intended to be placed on the edge of the disc; as a result of the movement of the disc this protruding part brings the player above the disc. Further, the organ takes on such a shape that it changes position only when the needle is above the edge of the disc.
The organ can, but need not, be made in such a way that it protects, in the known manner, the tip of the needle.
The phonographic player in accordance with the invention makes the precautions for the positioning of the needle point superfluous. The part which protrudes from the tip of the needle is placed, almost in an arbitrary fashion, on the edge of the disc.
The arrangement of this part on the player, and possibly the point of rotation of the player's arm are chosen so that, during the travel of the arm towards the axis of the record player, the aforementioned part, seen from the point of view of rotation of the arm, does not pass through the center of the axis, but beyond this center. In such an assembly, the placement of the aforementioned part on the edge of the disc causes a component, deduced from the circumferential speed
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
of the disc which automatically draws the player towards the disc, so that the tip of the needle which, when the player is fitted, is generally outside the disc is brought above this edge.
When the point of the needle is brought into a suitable place near the first groove, as a result of the movement of the disc, the aforementioned movable member turns or folds back which brings the needle onto the disc and the disc. forward movement of the player's arm automatically brings the tip of the needle into the first groove of the record.
The description of the appended drawing, given by way of non-limiting example, will make it clear how the invention can be implemented, the particularities which emerge both from the text and from the drawing, forming, of course, part of said invention.
In fig. 1, the phonographic player is fixed to the usual rotation arm 2, the point of rotation 3 of which is chosen so that, during its outward travel, the phonographic player describes a trajectory, which, seen from the front. rotation point 3, passes behind the axis 5 of the turntable.
This intentional arrangement automatically attracts the player 1, the protruding part 6 of which is placed on the edge 7 of the disc 8, towards the disc.
However, it is also possible to choose the point of rotation so that the path of the needle of reader 1 passes precisely through axis 5. In this case, it is necessary to ensure that the protruding part 6 is placed far enough from the reader's needle so that it describes a trajectory 4.
Figs. 2 and 3 (views from below) and 4 (side view) show in detail the reader according to the invention.
Under the reader 1, a member 9 can pivot about the axis 10, carried by a frame 11, rigidly fixed to the reader 1.
The member 9 is combined with a part 13, which laterally protrudes from the needle 12 of the reader and which is intended to be placed on
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the edge 7 of the disc 8. In the embodiment considered, the member 9 and the projecting part are integral, but, as shown in FIGS. 5 and 6, which will be described later, these parts can also be independent.
On the side which rests on the disc 8 the protruding part 13 has a plane edge so that when the disc 8 rotates clockwise the combination of 13 and 9 does not tumble around the axis 10, especially as the lever arm between axis 10 and the disc is chosen sufficiently short. As a result of the friction between the edge 17 of the disc 8 and the slightly inclined protruding part 13, the player 1 moves, following arrow 14, towards the disc until the needle 12 is at the bottom. above edge 7; at this moment, part 15 of organ 9, comes into contact with edge 7. Retort show cuts AB and CD, the lower side of part 15 is slightly rounded, unlike the rest of combination 15-9 .
Due to the rounded shape of the part 15, the combination 13-9 tumbles in the direction of rotation of the disc 8 and this tumbling is facilitated by the large lever arm between the surface 15 and the axis 10. This tumble brings the tip of the needle 12 to the edge 7 and at this moment, the advancement of the player 1 is sufficient to bring the needle into the first groove 16 of the disc 8.
In this way, the reader according to the invention automatically reaches into the groove 16 so that it could be said that it is provided with a groove searcher.
It is good that the lower edge of the combination 13-9 has a shape such that the angle in fig. 4 is slightly less than 90. This decreases the danger of premature tumbling of the above combination. In the figure, the direction of rotation of the disc is indicated by arrow 17.
During reproduction, part 15 of organ 9
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
drags on the disc, but this hardly causes wear of the disc because the member, very light, can be of a suitable material. In addition, the grooves are deep enough so that this surface touching cannot damage them.
Figs. 5 and 6 (seen from below) show another embodiment. As has already been mentioned, the member 9 is no longer integral with the projection 13. The latter consists of a plate, the end of which has a section such as represented by 18 in FIG. 5. In the plate is formed an opening 19 (fig.6), in which the rocker member 9 is supported.
Here also, the projection 13 being placed on the edge of the disc, the reader 1 with the needle 12 is brought over the edge; then the member 9 folds back (in Fig.6, this folded member is shown in dotted lines) and the needle rests on the disc. In the folded position, the member 9 is housed in the opening 19.
The phonographic player according to the invention is particularly advantageous in the case of an automatic disc changer. The automatic mechanism of this device can then be considerably simplified, since the phonographic player can always be placed in the same place, namely at the periphery of the disc of maximum diameter. Fig. 5 shows this clearly. If only the disc 20, with an outside diameter of 12 inches, and if the reader is placed in the position shown, is used, the member 9 immediately tumbles and the needle places itself in the needle. first groove on the disc 20.
On the other hand, if a disc of another diameter, of 10 inches for example, is placed on the record player, the end of the protruding part 13 reaches the edge of this disc 21 and the player is brought in the manner described above above the disc 21.
In certain cases, it is necessary to slow down the forward stroke of the rotary shaft of the phonographic player, namely when the speed of this movement is too great for the first groove to pick up the player provided with its needle. In this case, it may happen that the needle skips a few furrows which may
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
damage the disc and prevent playback of the start of the recording.
To obviate this drawback, a member can be provided which slows down the movement of the arm before it reaches the first groove; this braking can be obtained using an elastic stopper, a part which slows down the movement by friction, etc.
It is also possible to provide in the automatic mechanism of the rotary shaft means, for example a momentary action lug, which eliminates the aforementioned drawback. It goes without saying that these indications will enable the practitioner to find several means of carrying out this braking.
